Soma Bay Golf
Soma Bay offers some of the best golfing in the world. Apart from the odd windy day, the weather is ideal for golfing – sun all year round. And the backdrop – the Red Sea. The golf course travels, in some part, right up to the edge of the sea, making the course that much more of a challenge. You can’t simply go rummaging in the woods to find a golf ball that’s gone astray or hit it out the bunker. No, if it goes off its intended flight into the sea, it’s gone to the reef and the breakers.
But then again, golf is about the challenge as much as it is about the scenery. Green luscious courses against the deep blue backdrop is what Soma Bay’s golf course offers you. And it’s hard to beat.
The course
The Soma Bay golf course is designed by World Champion, South African Golfer Gary Player. This is an 18 hole, par 72 course Championship Course. If you get overconfident, or too relaxed, the 9th hole island green will make you sweat a bit as nobody needs a water hazard in their game. Good luck.
The Driving Range
The most appealing aspect of this range is you can drive from both sides. This is a very clever and efficient design, allowing more golfers more space to practice their swings. But that’s not all. Stretched out in an east to west direction, at some point you could be swinging straight into the sun. Not a problem. Just head to the other side of the range and you’ll have the sun behind you allowing you to see your ball very clearly as it flies.
The Facilities and Pro Shop
The Facilities and Pro Shop are set not only in the heart of Soma Bay also the heart of the Cascades Golf Club. It offers showers, lockers and the usual changing room equipment while the Pro Shop offers merchandise, rental equipment and equipment for sale. The putting green is set right outside the entrance making this just the perfect place for golfers in Soma Bay.
Trivia
Believe it of not, this land used to be used as a military base and needed to be cleared of landmines before construction took place. Rest assured if you’re planning on visiting Soma Bay, there’s not a single one left.
Opening in 1998, Soma Bays Cascades golf course was the first championship golf course in North Africa and Middle East to be designed by somebody of the stature of Gary Player.
